From 2018 to 2020, they successfully scaled up bioconversion technology and commissioned the Veolia Bioconversion Malaysia plant, Veolia’s first industrial-scale insect facility. Today the factory has the capacity to produce 3000 tons of insect meal per year.
1 kg of black soldier fly eggs produces 6 metric tons of larvae in 10 days, which, once fed with organic matter, is recovered as animal protein.

In October 2023 Veolia received permission from Traces (Trade Control and Expert System) to export insect meal (entomeal) and insect oil (entolipid) to Europe. This opened the doors to the European markets.
In January 2024, Vicinus Trade International B.V. was appointed by Veolia Bioconversion Malaysia as their official agent for Europe. Today several producers in various European countries have made the (transition) to processing the insect proteins from Veolia Bioconversion Malaysia in their pet food product. These producers praise the high quality in combination with a very good taste and smell.
